About us
Initiated as an independent, non-profit and secular entity, Gilgamesh society takes interest in all cultural, historical and economic aspects pertaining to the region known historically by the name of ‘fertile crescent’, that is the Levant, the great Syria and Mesopotamia, and all its affiliations to the Arab world as a hole. In establishing and naming our organisation, we have been inspired by the Sumerian myth ‘Gilgamesh’ written in the third millennium B.C.
Where is the ‘fertile crescent’?
In general, it is the region of eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea incorporating: Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and the southeastern parts of Turkey.
Our goals:
The Gilgamesh Society aims to found a Canadian-International forum incorporating individuals and organisations interested in the history (archeological missions, tourist activities, etc.), culture (fine arts, cinema, theater, conferences etc.) and economics (development projects, support of SMEs, etc.) of the Levant & Mesopotamia region and the greater Arab World in general. We hope that such a forum would be active in creating bridges of mutual understanding in terms of problematic situations experienced by countries in the middle East and it is also meant to gather the immigrants of Middle Eastern origins and help them to better incorporation into their new Canadian society.

Qui sommes-nous ?
La société Gilgamesh est une société indépendante, laïque et sans but lucratif. Elle aborde tous les aspects culturels, historiques et économique de la Mésopotamie, des régions traditionnellement connues sous le nom de ‘Bilad Alsham’ ou ‘la Syrie naturelle’ et leurs expansions à travers le monde arabe. L’épopée de Gilgamesh, rédigée depuis environ 3700 ans, a inspiré la création de cette organisation.
Quel est l’emplacement de Bilad Alsham, la Syrie naturelle et de la Mésopotamie ?
Elles se situent à l’est de la mer Méditerranéenne et comprennent aujourd’hui la Syrie, la Palestine, le Liban, l’Iraq, la Jordanie et le sud-est de la Turquie. Cette région a été nommée Croissant fertile par l’archéologue James Henri Breasted de l’université Chicago. Cela s’explique simplement par le fait que les différentes zones de cette région forment un arc qui détient la forme d’un croissant. Cet arc autour du nord du désert syrien et à travers la Palestine et la Mésopotamie, jusqu’au golf arabo-perse.
Quel est notre objectif :
La société Gilgamesh a pour mission de fonder un forum canadien international qui regroupera les personnes et les organisations intéressées par l’histoire (expéditions archéologiques, excursions touristiques, etc.) la culture (beaux-arts, cinéma, théâtre, conférence, etc.) et les aspects économiques de la région du croissant fertile (projet de développement, aide aux jeunes et aux PME). Ainsi, une meilleure compréhension de la région se développera. Il sera également possible de rassembler les multiples communautés émergeantes de ces terres lointaines et de les aider à mieux s’intégrer dans leur pays d’accueil, dans leur nouveau foyer, le Canada.

جلجامش هي جمعية مستقلة، علمانية وليست ذات هدف ربحي. تعنى بكل المناحي الثقافية والتاريخية والاقتصادية للمنطقة المعروفة تراثياً باسم بلاد الشام أو سوريا الطبيعية ومنطقة ما بين النهرين وامتداداتها على كامل مساحة الوطن العربي. لقد استلهمنا أسطورة جلجامش السومرية المكتوبة في الألف الثالث قبل الميلاد لتأسيس
جمعيتنا وإعطائها اسمها الحالي.

هي المنطقة الواقعة شرق المتوسط والممتدة على مساحة الدول الحالية التالية: سوريا وفلسطين ولبنان والعراق والأردن وجنوب شرق تركيا.
ما هي أهدافنا؟
تهدف جمعية جلجامش لتأسيس منتدى كندي وعالمي يشمل الأشخاص والمنظمات المهتمة بتاريخ (بعثات أثرية ورحلات سياحية إلخ...) وثقافة (فنون جميلة وسينما ومسرح ومؤتمرات إلخ ...) واقتصاد (مشاريع تنموية ودعم المؤسسات الصغيرة والمتوسطة إلخ...) منطقة بلاد الشام وما بين النهرين والوطن العربي الكبير عموماً. نحن نأمل بأن يساعد هذا المنتدى على مد جسور الفهم والتفهم المتبادل فيما يخص الإشكاليات التي تمر بها منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأن يجمع الجاليات ذات الجذور شرق الأوسطية ويساعدها على أن تندمج بشكل أفضل في مجتمعها الكندي الجديد.

Woke or Cancel culture
The conference is in French!
According to Dr. Rachad Antonius of UQAM, the term 'Woke' has its origins in contemporary struggles for social justice in the US. To be 'Woke' is: a) to be aware of social injustices, especially those based on 'race' and b) to take a stand against the cultural hegemony of the dominant by developing counter-hegemonic conceptual tools and taking action to challenge it... However, for various reasons, woke postures have ended up giving rise to overbidding and slippage that have discredited them and are responsible for the pejorative use of the term 'woke'.
How can we explain these slippages? What made the 'wokists' feel entitled to silence the speeches that they judge rightly or wrongly aggressive, authorizing serious and unjustified actions of censorship.
The slippages or controversies of 'wokism' have crystallized mainly on gender, racism and islamophobia. For each of these issues, an initially solid posture slips, as it stretches concepts and theories beyond their limits of validity.
The 'Woke' culture has turned into a dangerous 'Cancel culture'.

Brief biography of the speaker: Annie-Ève Collin studied philosophy at the Université de Montréal. She has participated in various collectives, including Liberté surveillée, directed by Normand Baillargeon. Like Baillargeon, she defends freedom of expression and is concerned about the threats posed to it by a certain fringe of the left. She became a critic of the said left-wing fringe, which some people today refer to as ‘wokes’, by being herself the target of verbal violence and even intimidation campaigns: this led her to take an interest in authors who spoke of cases similar to hers and in testimonies of people who had experienced the same thing. Pluckrose and Lindsay's Triumph of Intellectual Shams tells us a great deal about this fringe of the left, its intellectual influences, the ideas it advocates, and its ways of dealing with those who do not share its creed, and seeks to distinguish the left and progressivism from these excesses, a task that is essential in the speaker's eyes. She also defends the priority of science as a reliable approach to acquiring knowledge, another point on which she agrees with the authors of The Triumph of Intellectual Impostures.
ووك أوثقافة الإلغاء والإقصاء
الذي يهدف لتحقيق العدالة الاجتماعية في الولايات المتحدة الامريكية تحديداً. أن تكون - ووك - يعني أن تكون واعياً ومدركاً لوجود الظلم الاجتماعي، وبالأخص ذلك الظلم المرتبط بالعرق، ثم أن تتخذ موقفاً واضحاً من هيمنة الطبقات المسيطرة ثقافياً من خلال تطوير المفاهيم المضادة للهيمنة والقيام بالأفعال المناسبة والفعالية لمواجهتها. لكن ولعدة أسباب مجتمعة، تحولت مواقف الووك إلى مجىد مزايدات وانحرافات هامة أدت بها إلى أن تقع في خانة الازدراء التام وفقدان المصداقية.
كيف لنا أن نفسر هذه الانحرافات؟ كيف لنا أن نفهم نزعة "الووكيون" أو دعاة الووك إلى أن يعطوا أنفسهم الحق بإسكات الأصوات والآراء التي يرونها خاطئة مستفزة مما أدى بهم إلى القيام بتصرفات خطيرة وإلى أن يقعوا بلاعدالة الحظر والرقابة على الآخرين؟
لقد تركزت انحرافات أو تناقضات "الووكية" إن جاز المصطلح، حول الجنس أو الجندر و العنصرية والإسلاموفوبيا. لقد كان هناك انحرافات هامة للغاية على صعيد كل واحد من هذه الأسئلة وهو ما أدى إلى انزلاق مواقف الووك المتينة في أساسها كونها عملت على تمدد هذه المصطلحات إلى ما بعد حدودها المنطقية النظرية المتعارف عليها. بالمجمل بإمكاننا القول أن ثقافة الووك قد تحولت إلى ثقافة اقصاء خطيرة.

آني إيف كولان
درست آني إيف كولان الفلسفة في جامعة مونتريال. شاركت في العديد من التجمعات الفكرية مثل "الحرية تحت الرقابة" الذي يترأسه نورمان بايارجون. متأثرة بهذا الأخير، قامت آني إيف مولان بالدفاع عن حرية التعبير جراء تعرض هذه الحرية للتهديد على يد بعض جماعات اليسار التي لا تحمل رسمياً اسم "ووك". جراء تعرضها لممارسات عنفية لفظة وحملات تشهير وترهيب، اهتمت آني إيف كولان بالكتاب والأفراد الذين عاشوا ماعاشته وعانوا نفس معاناتها. من هنا بالإمكان اعتبار كتاب "انتصار الاحتيالات الفكرية" لكاتبتيه بلاكروز و ليندزاي مثالاُ فاضحاً لهذه الفئة من اليسار ولتأثيرها الثقافي على الأفكار التي تطرحها وتدافع عنها والوسائل التي تتعامل بها مع من يخالفونها الرأي. تحاول آني إيف كولان جاهدة التمييز ما بين اليسار التقدمي وبين هذه الاتجاهات المنحرفة وهو ما تعتبره المحاضِرة أمراً أساسياً لا بد من القيام به. تدافع المحاضِرة أيضاً عن أولوية العلم بصفته وسيلة موثوقة لاكتساب المعرفة ما يشكل نقطة أخرى تتفق بها مع مؤلفي كتاب "انتصار الاحتيالات الثقافية" المذكور أعلاه.

Woke ou la culture du bannissement
La conférence est en langue française !
Selon Dr, Rachad Antonius de l’UQAM, «le terme ‘Woke’ trouve son origine dans les luttes contemporaines pour la justice sociale aux ÉU. Être ‘Woke’ c’est : a) être conscient des injustices sociales, surtout fondées sur la ‘race’ et b) prendre position contre l’hégémonie culturelle des dominants en développant des outils conceptuels contre hégémoniques et en menant des actions pour le contester... Or, pour diverses raisons, les postures wokes ont fini par donner lieu à des surenchères et des dérapages qui les ont discréditées et qui sont responsables de l’usage péjoratif du terme ‘woke’.
Comment expliquer ces dérapages ? Qu’est ce qui a fait que les ‘wokistes’ se sentent le droit de vouloir faire taire les discours qu’elles jugent à tort ou à raison agressant, autorisant du coup des actions graves et injustifiés de censure.
Les dérapages ou bien les controverses du ‘wokisme’ se sont cristallisées principalement sur le genre, le racisme et l’islamophobie. Pour chacune de ces questions, une posture au départ solide dérape, car elle étire des concepts et des théories au-delà de leurs limites de validité.
La culture ‘Woke’ s’est transformée en une culture dangereuse de bannissement ‘Cancel culture’.

Brève biographie de la conférencière :Annie-Ève Collin a étudié en philosophie à l'Université de Montréal. Elle a participé à différents collectifs, dont Liberté surveillée, dirigé par Normand Baillargeon. À l’instar de ce dernier, elle défend la liberté d’expression et s’inquiète des menaces que fait peser sur celle-ci une certaine frange de gauche. Elle est devenue critique de ladite frange de gauche, que d’aucuns désignent aujourd’hui par le terme « wokes », en étant elle-même la cible de violence verbale et même de campagnes d’intimidation : cela l’a poussée à s’intéresser à des auteurs qui parlaient de cas semblables au sien et à des témoignages de personnes ayant vécu la même chose. Le Triomphe de impostures intellectuelles de Pluckrose et Lindsay en dit justement long sur cette frange de gauche, sur ses influences intellectuelles, sur les idées qu’elle défend et sur ses façons d’agir avec ceux qui ne communient pas à son credo et cherche à distinguer la gauche et le progressisme de ces dérives, une tâche essentielle aux yeux de la conférencière. Elle défend aussi la priorité de la science en tant qu’approche fiable pour acquérir des connaissances, autre point sur lequel elle rejoint les auteurs du Triomphe des impostures intellectuelles.

The story of Gilgamesh
The story of the god-man Gilgamesh is one of the oldest stories in the world ; it was inscribed onto clay tablets over 5000 years ogo in Mesopotamia (where Iraq ans Syria are today). There are many versions of the story but the first people who told it were called Sumerians and Gilgamesh was once their King. The people who lived in Mesopotamis discovered many things ; irrigations, The wheel, the first codes of law, the 60 minute hour, and, most important, writing. Without writnig the epic of Gilgamesh would certainly have been lost. The Sumerians, and later other Mesopotamians such as Akkadians, Babylonians ans Assyrians, wrote the story in cuneiform, the first script in the world.
Mesopotamis means « the land between rivers ». On the map, one can see two rivers in Iraq : the Tigris and Euphrates. In between these rivers the land was very fertile and allowed for farming. When the ancient people started farming these lands over 8000 years ago, the extra food they produced eventualy allowed others to build towns and cities with names like Nippur, Ur, Lagash and Uruk – the setting for the epic of Gilgamesh. The cities became the world’s first civilisation. Today, because the rivers have changed their cours, the land around Uruk is almost entirely a desert, making it hard to believe that it was once covered with farmers’ fields, trees and great cities. One can still see the ruins of the wall built by Gilgamesh and the remains of ancient cities.
Over time other people in Mesopotamia told versions of the Gilgamesh legend in places like Akkad, Babylonia and Assyria. Later, parts of the story would make their way into the myths of Egypt, Greece, Persia and even of the Celts in what are now the British Isles. Some of the stories in the Old Testament are said to share similar origins to the epic of Gilgamesh. Mesopotamia is believed to be the setting for the Garden oe Eden and the birthplace of Abraham.
Clay tablets were first found in the earth of Iraq ans Syria by French and British archeologists in the 19th century. They brought the tablets home with them, and others translated the cuneiform writing later in the century. Today these tablets continue to be found and can be seen in many museums but those containing the Gilgamesh story are rare. The collections in London, Paris and Philadelphia are especially famous.

Le récit de Gilgamesh
L’épopée de Gilgamesh est l’une des plus anciennes histoires au monde; elle fut gravée sur les tablettes d’argile en Mésopotamie (là où se trouve aujourd’hui l’Iraq et la Syrie), il y a plus de 5 000 ans. Les nombreux peuples de la région en ont raconté des versions différentes, mais toutes présentaient Gilgamesh comme le roi-dieu de la cité d’Uruk partant à la recherche de la vie éternelle après la mort de son ami Enkidu. L’échec de Gilgamesh fait de lui le premier héros de tragédie de toute la littérature.
Comme bien des civilisations anciennes construisaient leurs cités le long des cours d’eau, les histoires d’inondations sont presque universelles. Mésopotamie signifie « entre les fleuves », et le déluge raconté par Outa-Napishtin (parallèle de Noé, dans la tradition judéo-chrétienne) a introduit l’importance de la « sagesse » dans toutes les versions de l’épopée de Gilgamesh. Sur une carte de l’Iraq, on peut distinguer deux fleuves : le Tigre et l’Euphrate. Les crues imprévisibles de ces fleuves causaient des inondations catastrophiques pour les peuples des cités riveraines et influençaient leur vision du monde. Quand le cours des fleuves a changé, Uruk, la cité bien-aimée de Gilgamesh, fut abandonnée, et les terres environnantes sont devenues le désert que l’on connaît aujourd’hui.
Les Mésopotamiens ont été les premiers à décrire un endroit terrible appelé « enfer », qui passerait ensuite dans les croyances judéo-chrétiennes. Les expériences terrifiantes que traverse Gilgamesh au cours de sa quête sont reprises dans la littérature classique et dans l’art médiéval. Au 19e siècles, l’artiste Gustave Doré emprunte ces images pour illustrer la Divine Comédie de Dante. A son tour, Ludmila Zeman les emprunte à Doré, ce qui n’ôte rien à l’incroyable travail de recherche qu’elle a effectué sur les statuts et reliques conservées dans les plus grands musées du monde.
Le lionceau qui accompagne Gilgamesh dans sa quête trouve sa source dans l’emblème du roi. En effet, les tablettes découvertes en Mésopotamie montrent Gilgamesh entouré de lions symbolisant sa force et son courage.
L’immortalité de Gilgamesh fut assurée par des choses bien plus grandes que sa célèbre cité. Premier héros de la littérature occidentale, Gilgamesh incarne toutes les vertus associées à l’héroïsme : le courage, la compassion, la loyauté la ténacité dans l’adversité et le dévouement à une vision. Du héros grec Ulysse au prince troyen Énée, du roi Arthur d’Angleterre aux voyageurs interplanétaires de la culture populaire moderne, tous nos héros doivent leur attrait aux normes d’héroïsme établies par Gilgamesh car il est immortel.

قصة الملك جلجامش
تعد ملحمة جلجامش واحدة من آقدم القصص الملحمية المعروفة في العالم. نقشت هذه الملحمة على آلواح الفخار المشوي في بلاد ما بين النهرين حيث توجد الآن
سوريا والعراق ، منذ ما يزيد عن الـ ٥٠٠٠ عام.
لقد روت الشعوب المتعددة التي تقطن هذه البقعة الجغرافية قصة الملك جلجامش باشكال مختلفة لكنها كلها اجمعت على ان جلجامش كان ذلك الملك الاله الحاكم لمدينة اوروك الذي ذهب للبحث عن سر الخلود بعد موت صديقه انكيدو. وكان ان ادى فشل جلجامش في مهمته هذه الى تحوله الى اول بطل روائي تراجيدي عرفه العالم.
لقد شيدت معظم الحضارات القديمة مدنها على مجرى الانهار ما ادى الى تكرار ظهور قصة الطوفان في اكثر من مكان. ولقد ادت قصة الطوفان المروية على لسان اوتانا - بشتين (الممماثل او المقابل لنوح في التراث اليهودي المسيحي*) الى تسليط الضوء على الاهمية المركزية للحكمة التي تنضح بها كل الروايات النختلفة لملحمة جلجامش.
على خريطة العراق بالامكان تبيان نهرين شهيرين هما دجلة والفرات. ولقد ادى التغيير المفاجئ في مجرى هذين النهرين الى فيضانات مدمرة كانت ذات نتائج كارثية بالنسبة للمدن المشاطئة للنهرين ما اثر في نظرة شعوب المنطقة للعالم.
لقد هجرت مدينة الملك جلجامش المحبوبة - اوروك - عندما تغير مجرى النهر وتحولت اراضيها الخصبة الى الصحراء التي نراها اليوم.
كان سكان بلاد ما بين النهرين اول من اشار الى المكان الرهيب الذي ندعوه جحيماً اليوم والذي سيتكرر اسمه في المعتقدات اليهودية - المسيحية* اللاحقة.
كما ظهرت الاستحقاقات والمغامرات المرعبة التي خاضها جلجامش اثناء بحثه عن الخلود في كل الادبيات الكلاسيكية وادب القرون الوسطى. لقد قام الفنان غستاف دور في القرت التاسع عشر باستعارة هذه الصور كي يرسم اللوحات المرافقة للكوميديا الالهية التي كتبها دانتي. وبدورها قامت لودميلا زيمان باستعارتها من دور الامر الذي لا ينقص ابدا من اهمية عملها البحثي الضخم على المخطوطات والاثار المحفوظة في اهم واكبر متاحف العالم.
يعود السبب في وجود شبل الاسد المرافق للملك جلجامش في مغامراته الى وجود هذا الشبل على شعار الملك نفسه. وفي واقع الامر تظهر الرقم الفخارية المكتشفة في بلاد ما بين النهرين الملك جلجامش محاطاً بالاسود دليلاً على قوة باسه وشجاعته
لقد وصل جلجامش للخلود من خلال انجازات اهم بكثير من شهرة مدينته فهو اول بطل في الادب الغربي. كما انه يجسد كل الفضائل والصفات الحسنة المرافقة للبطولة : الشجاعة والشغف والوفاء والصلابة والتفاني من اجل تحقيق الهدف. من قصة البطل الاغريقي أوليس إلى الأمير الطروادي إينياس. ومن آرثر ملك انجلترا إلى المغامرين العابرين للمجرات في الثقافة الشعبية المعاصرة.
كل هؤلاء مدينون بشعبيتهم وصفاتهم البطولية الاسطورية الى جلجامش - الملك الخالد.
